Name and Purpose:
Section 1. The official name of this chapter is the Hampshire Chapter
of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, which appears on the chapter
granted by the National Council of the National Honor Society, duly signed by
the members of the National Council.
Section 2. The objective of this chapter is to create an enthusiasm
for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy
leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of
Hampshire High School.
Requirements for Membership:
Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be based upon Leadership,
Service, Scholarship, and Character.
Section 2. Membership of this chapter is either active, or graduate.
The graduate members have no vote. Active members become graduate members at
graduation.
Section 3. Candidates must have spent at least two terms at Hampshire
High School and be a member of the junior or senior class. The minimum weighted
grade point average shall be 5.0. This is a cumulative WGPA. Any junior or
senior who can rise in scholarship to or above such a standard will then be
considered on their service, leadership, and character.
Activities:
Section 1. Each chapter shall determine one or more service projects
each year.
Section 2. All members shall regularly participate in these
projects.
Section 3. These projects shall have the following characteristics:
fulfill a need within the school or community, have the support of the
administration and the faculty, be appropriate and educationally defensible, and
be well planned, organized, and executed.
Section 4. Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and
participating in a service project which reflects his or her particular talents
and interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members
contribute.
Section 5. Each chapter shall publicize its projects in a positive
way.
National Honor Society Pledge
I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of
the National Honor Society to which I have been selected.
I will be true to the principles for which it stands; I will be loyal to
my school and will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship,
service, leadership, and character.
Selection Process
The selection process for new National Honor Society members begins in
the Fall Semester of each school year. Juniors and Seniors may be considered.
The selection is based on four distinct qualities; candidates must meet the
qualifications in all four areas below.
The Qualities Are:
-Scholarship - The candidate must have a minimum overall WGPA of 5.0
for all completed high school credits. No rounding up is done. If a student meets
his criteria, he or she will receive an application to apply for NHS membership. The
application will allow students to demonstrate how they fit the other three qualities.
·Leadership - Students are evaluated for leadership. This does not necessarily imply
that a candidate must hold an office in an organization, but there must be
evidence of the student's ability to lead.
·Service - The candidate must provide information that he or she has been and is
currently active in school service and community service.
·Character -A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities:
respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The
candidate's discipline record for the current school year shall be checked.
Faculty members shall also provide input.
Application & Selection Timeline
-November 2nd - Applications due
-November 3rd - mid-December - staff committee reads and scores applications
-Before Winter Break - students receive letters notifying them of their status
-February 1st - Induction Ceremony

-List of recent sports, extra-curricular activities, volunteer hours, honors, and jobs
-Personal Response statement
-2 Staff Recommendations submitted online
-Character Reference Form from someone who is not a teacher, family member, or coach
-Volunteer Letter on official letterhead from volunteer organization
